Ayton Castle

The surviving ruined tower is the last structural element to survive of the important medieval and post-medieval manorial complex. Hence, the architectural significance of the tower is considered to be very high. Furthermore, it represents a building type relatively rare in Yorkshire, and it preserves a certain amount of architectural detail. The tower makes a fundamental contribution to the character of the present-day landscape. It is all that remains of a fortified Tower house which was constructed in 1410 by Sir Ralph Eure, a wealthy landowner who had married into the local de Aton family.
